Abstract

The rhizobial signal molecules that are involved in and in most cases are sufficient for the induction of the different steps of nodule formation are the Nod factors of which the structure and biosynthesis are described in more detail in chapter 20. Briefly, Nod factors are molecules that are composed of a chitin backbone attached to a fatty acyl chain. Depending on the rhizobial species and within the same species, different susbtitutions can occur on the chitin backbone. The length and the saturation level of the fatty acyl chain is also subject to variations as well. The aim of this chapter is to summarize the different responses induced by Nod factors in the host plant, and to describe the structure-function relationship and possible perception mechanisms of Nod factors. Furthermore, we included in the last part of this chapter a brief description of some of the defense-related responses induced during the interaction between rhizobia and legumes.
