Effects of Salicylic Acid and Related Compounds on Photosynthetic Parameters in Young Maize (Zea Mays L.) Plants

  • Chapter
Photosynthesis: Mechanisms and Effects

Abstract

Salicylic acid is known to be a signal molecule in acquired resistance to pathogens in several plant species (1). It was also reported that SA accumulates during exposure to ozone or UV light (2,3), and SA treatment improved the chilling tolerance of maize (4) and the heat-shock tolerance of mustard plants (5). Recently we observed that some compounds similar to salicylic acid (benzoic acid, acetyl-salicylic acid, but not sulpho-salicylic acid) also reduced the symptoms of chilling injury in young maize plants. The effects on the photosynthetic parameters of these compounds will be discussed.
