The Application of 15N-NMR in the Analysis of N-Oxygenated amidines and guanidines

  • Chapter
N-Oxidation of Drugs

Abstract

With regard to their magnetic moments, both nitrogen isotopes, 14N and 15N, would appear to be suitable for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Unfortunately, however, the 14N nucleus (natural abundance 99.63%) with a nuclear spin quantum number of I = 1 possesses a quadrupole moment (Table 2.1) and is thus not appropriate for high resolution studies. As a result of quadrupole relaxation, the line widths of the signals are very broad and relatively sharp resonance lines can be observed only in special cases.
