Autoantibodies in rheumatoid arthritis

  • Chapter
Manual of Biological Markers of Disease

Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most frequent chronic inflammatory joint disease. Its prevalence is approximately 1% of populations in the western world. RA is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized primarily by polyarticular, symmetric synovitis. It commonly has a relentlessly progressive course, although exacerbations can often interchange with periods of improvement. Rarely, spontaneous remission may occur.
