Molecular mechanisms to confer herbicide resistance

  • Chapter
Molecular Biology in Crop Protection

Abstract

Modern agriculture has been shaped by several major innovations which include mechanization, intensive plant breeding and pest control. Not the least of these has been the use of chemical herbicides which in western agriculture have replaced traditional labour-intensive manual methods of removing weeds. The history of synthetic weed killers dates back to the second world war with the invention of the phenoxyalkanoic acid herbicides such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Eradication of weeds from a crop enables enhanced yields through removal of competition for resources and prevents undesirable contamination of the harvested crop with weed seeds. Weeds may additionally act as a reservoir for crop pests. Minimum tillage practices are facilitated by the use of broad-spectrum herbicides. Recently, the desirability of chemical weed control methods has been questioned in some quarters. However, there can be no doubt that the availability of inexpensive, plentiful and varied food in the developed countries has been due to agricultural intensification of which chemical weed control methods are an integral part.
