Fluorescence Lifetime Variations and Local Spectroscopy in Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy

Abstract

We present new results of Fluorescence — Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy (Fluorescence-SNOM) on ruby micro crystallites demonstrating local spectroscopy with a lateral resolution of δx ≤ λ / 20. The fluorescence near-field contrast of the micro crystallites is shown to depend on the dopant concentration and the crystal modification. The fluorescence lifetimes of the ruby micro crystallites are shortened when a dielectric tip is in close proximity. Based on tip induced local changes of spectroscopic properties a large variety of novel near-field microscopes can be envisioned.
