Abstract

Uric acid is a compound chemically related to alloxan. Alloxan destroys the pancreatic beta cells and thus induces diabetes. According to Griffiths’ studies (1950) uric acid has the same effect. Presumably in patients with gout, uric acid crystals are precipitated in the pancreas and as a consequence the islet cells are destroyed. According to this concept the concomitant manifestation of gout and diabetes would be expected. The relationship is not at all equivocal. According to the results of the Framingham study (Hall et al. 1967) and the Tecumseh study (Mikkelson et al. 1965) conducted on large populations, there is no such relationship between gout and diabetes.
