The Biology of Manganese Transforming Microorganisms in Soil

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 33))

Abstract

Seventy-five years ago Beijerinck set the stage for all subsequent work on microbial Mn oxidation with a paper entitled: “Oxidation of Manganese Carbonate by Bacteria and Fungi” (8). This classic paper contains many original observations on the biology of Mn-oxidizing microorganisms in soil. Other primary sources for this topic include the papers of Bromfield and Skerman (20) and van Veen (82) which contain practical information on the isolation and study of Mn-oxidizing soil microorganisms. Microbial Mn oxidation in a broader environmental context, encompassing freshwater and marine environments as well as soil, has been an active area of research for microbiologists in recent years (For reviews see, 33, 41, 43, 59, 60, 61, 84).
