Digestive disorders and nutritional toxicity

  • Chapter
The Rumen Microbial Ecosystem

Abstract

The role of ruminal microbes in transforming dietary constituents into nutrients needed for growth, milk production and maintenance of animal tissues has long been recognized. These microbes are also responsible for other biochemical transformations of feedstuffs. In some instances these transformations yield harmful compounds which can have dramatic pharmacological or toxic effects on the host animal. In other instances, more beneficial transformations occur and naturally occurring toxins are converted into compounds which are no longer a threat to animal health. The latter activities support the concept that the rumen microbial population serves as a ‘first line of defense’ against intoxicants that are sometimes found in ruminant feeds.
