On the Temperature Dependence of Equilibrium Concentration of Slightly Crosslinked Gels

  • Chapter
Biological and Synthetic Polymer Networks

Abstract

The temperature dependence of equilibrium concentration of chemically crosslinked swollen polymer networks was investigated. The predictions of the classical James—Guth theory and the scaling theory were compared with each other as well as with the experimental findings.

It was shown that the scaled concentration is a function of the scaled temperature only, according to both theories. Experimental results obtained for poly(vinyl acetate) gel homologues swollen by isopropyl alcohol supported the validity of the theoretical predictions.
