Abstract
“Molecular electronics”, molecular-scale electronics, or unimolecular electronics (UE), studies electronic processes measured or controlled on a nanoscopic or molecular scale [1]. (In the 1980’s, when results on single molecules were still scarce, molecular electronics, also known as molecule-based electronics, was defined more boadly to also include electronic processes by crystals and conducting polymers [1]). UE focuses narrowly on electronic processes that involve one molecule, or very few molecules, on the scale of 0.5 to 3 nm. UE “reaches out and touches” individual molecules, and exploits their structure to control the flow of electrical signals.
