Abstract
A serendipitous story in Florence in Italy caused me to begin research on alkaliphiles in 1968. In 1967, after my return from Davis, I found myself at a dead end as far as research was concerned. I have an old passport with a black cover issued on 17 September 1968 (Fig. 4.1) and, using this, I left Haneda Airport on 1 October, and flew to Europe, in the hope that it would lift me out of the slump. I toured many of the places I had visited on my trip in 1960 and spent about a month just seeing the sights.
