Abstract

The term “alcoholism” has been introduced into the common vocabulary gradually during the past 30 or 40 years. The mere fact that some behavioral disorders connected with excessive drinking, earlier summarily labelled as “drunkenness”, are now called alcoholism, probably should be taken as an expression of a new conception of the problem. Implied by the modern conception is, among other things, that alcoholism is a subject of specialized professional and scientific interest.

The author wishes to acknowledge the valuable assistance of Mr. E. J. Immonen, from the Finnish State Liquor Monopoly, who helped to gather source materials used for this article.
