Abstract
There is a paucity of published work on the behavior of Vierendeel girders in the open literature; however, a considerable amount of effort has focussed on the strength and stiffness of T-joints, particularly involving rectangular hollow sections,(RHS) (Wardenier, 1982). This section is particularly well suited for Vierendeel applications since its closed profile enhances the graceful appearance of the open panel truss. For relatively long spans, design calculations would suggest that smaller width verticals than chord members may be utilized. However, a flexible and weak chord connecting face sometimes requires reinforcing the joint or oversizing the web members to produce an equal width connection. An alternative concept is to employ double rectangular hollow section (RHS) chords as indicated in Fig. 1. This detail provides the chord with a stiff double web which helps to transfer the branch member’s moment or axial force to the chord.
