A Preliminary Study of Serum Carbamazepine Levels in Healthy Subjects and in Patients with Epilepsy

Abstract

The medical treatment of epilepsy has been significantly improved by adjusting the dose of anti-epileptic drugs to the therapeutic range of serum levels (Buchthal et al., 1960, 1968; Lund et al., 1971; Penry et al., 1972). For carbamazepine, however, the therapeutic range in serum has not yet been established although different methods for determination of the drug have been available (Führ, 1964; Scheiffarth et al., 1966; Larsen et al., 1969; Nielsen and Remmer, 1969; Christiansen, 1971 a; Kupferberg, 1972). Furthermore, little is known about the pharmacokinetics of this drug in man (Winter Research Laboratories, 1968; Meinardi, 1972; Cereghino et al., 1973), especially the relation between serum and cerebrospinal fluid concentrations (Johannessen and Strandjord, 1971; Meinardi, 1972; Johannessen and Strandjord, 1973).
