Supportive Care in Cancer Patients

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 108))

Abstract

Cancer is a potent agent of change. Regardless of the magnitude or direction of change, cancer consistently disrupts a family’s established patterns of daily living. The availability and complexity of today’s medical treatments extends life and heightens the unknown for people with cancer. As patients find themselves facing a life defined by uncertainties, remissions, exacerbations, and changes in treatments; the family, likewise, is confronted with continual change. Each member of the family, patient included, must deal with the ramifications of the cancer diagnosis for themselves as individuals while attempting to cope as a family with the disease and its treatment.
