Extraction and Analysis of Microbial DNA from Soil

  • Chapter
Nucleic Acids in the Environment

Part of the book series: Springer Lab Manuals ((SLM))

Abstract

The analysis of soil DNA by molecular methods offers many exciting possibilities for microbial ecologists. For instance, the presence and relative importance in soil processes of specific microorganisms can be assessed by using analysis of DNA extracted from soil (Trevors 1992). For analysis and identification, the DNA of soil organisms is usually first released from the cells, since neither DNA-DNA hybridization nor polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can work through an intact microbial cell wall.
