Abstract
This paper reviews the types of genetic interactions between plants and viruses. Some possible models are considered from a mainly theoretical point of view, and are then compared with the experimental data. For non-host immunity, the evidence for positive (inhibitor) and negative (lack of susceptibility) mechanisms is assessed, and the possibility that some cases of apparent non-host immunity operate by preventing cell-to-cell transport is considered. For cultivar resistance, links between different types of genetic control and possible mechanisms are discussed. Virulence (resistance-breaking behaviour by the virus) is considered in terms of frequency, genetic control, and possible association with loss of pathogenic fitness.
