Abstract
The term hypersensitive reaction (HR) has been defined as the rapid and localized death of challenged plant cells associated with the restriction of microbial colonization. Plant cell death and restriction of microbial growth are essential features of all hypersensitive reactions but biochemical events associated with the HR may vary. Thus, in some plants, phytoalexins may accumulate whereas in others, different antimicrobial systems (lignification and chitinase synthesis for example) may be activated (Mansfield 1986; Hahlbrock & Scheel 1987).
