Abstract

According to the model proposed to interpret the physiological responses elicited by fusicoccin (FC) in different plant materials, binding of FC to its plasma membrane (PM) receptor would lead to the activation of the PM H+-ATPase responsible for electrogenic H+ extrusion, which in turn would influence the activity of several physiological processes (Marrè, 1985). However, early attempts to find a stimulation of ATPase activity by FC in isolated membranes led to little reproducible and often conflicting results (reviewed by Marrè, 1985), mostly due to the poor knowledge of membrane-bound ATPases of plant cells available at that time.
