Forensic Science Progress

Part of the book series: Forensic Science Progress ((FORENSIC,volume 3))

Abstract

There are a variety of methods for visualising latent and contaminated fingerprints drawing on a wide area of science, from surface physics to chemistry. Although simple and effective methods, such as ninhydrin and powders, will remain the routine techniques for fingerprint technicians, there are now many methods available which supplement these development techniques, some of which are complicated and/or expensive. Valuable methods now available to us include cyanoacrylate ester vapour which is a simple easy to use technique and high powered light sources, such as argon ion lasers which although expensive, have increased the number of fluorescence techniques available. Recently, research into biological and bacteriological methods has offered potential for the future.
