Zusammenfassung
Die primären Pleuratumoren galten früher als eine Rarität. Mit der weltweiten Zunahme der Asbestproduktion nach 1945, die in den westlichen Industrieländern Ende der 70er Jahre ihren Höhepunkt erreichte [11, 12], tritt das diffuse Mesotheliom mit einer Latenzzeit von 20–30 Jahren zunehmend häufiger auf. Der Gipfel des asbestbedingten Mesothelioms ist somit etwa in den Jahren 2005–2025 zu erwarten. Das diffuse maligne Mesotheliom ist der häufigste Berufskrebs. Seltener sind die lokalisierten Mesotheliome, die nicht mit Asbest in Verbindung gebracht werden und Männer wie Frauen gleichermaßen im 6. und 7. Lebensjahrzehnt treffen. Der maligne Sekundärbefall der Pleura im Sinne einer Pleuritis carcinomatosa/sarcomatosa tritt dagegen relativ häufig auf. Etwa 1/3 aller Patienten mit bösartigen Leiden erleben im Endstadium den Befall einer oder beider Pleurahöhlen. Klinisch relevant werden beide Tumorentitäten durch rezidivierende Pleuraergüsse mit Atemnot und Thoraxschmerzen.
