Results of Therapy

  • Chapter
Exocrine Pancreatic Cancer

Abstract

Analyzing the results of various methods of treatment is difficult because the patient series providing these results are not homogeneous, and the stage of development of the tumor is not always determined using the same criteria from case to case. Nevertheless, we will try to point out, among the numerous therapeutic options, the advantages of each method as well as the path to be followed. To do this, we must answer three questions: 1. Do pancreatic resections improve the prognosis in comparison with palliative bypasses? 2. Which resections offer the best chance for a cure? 3. Which symptomatic and adjuvant therapies produce the maximum survival (length and comfort)?

This work does not relate our personal experience. Our patient series are limited and do not represent any scientific value and above all any statistical significance (81 surgical cases between 1977 and 1984, including only 15 partial or total resections and 51 by-passes). We deliberately chose to base this work on reviews of recent international studies. The large number of these studies did not allow us to quote them all.
