Abstract

To develop his method for the determination of water, Karl Fischer [3501] resorted to the well-known Bunsen reaction which is used to determine sulphur dioxide in aqueous solutions:

$$ 2{{\rm{H}}_2}{\rm{O + S}}{{\rm{O}}_{\rm{2}}} + {{\rm{I}}_{\rm{2}}} \to {{\rm{H}}_2}{\rm{S}}{{\rm{O}}_{\rm{4}}} + 2{\rm{HI}}{\rm{.}} $$
