Abstract
Chemistry is characterized by similarity and contiguity whereas formal classification schemes presuppose the existence of discontinuities. On the other hand, classification schemes help to recognize regularities and to derive relationships. Thus, a compromise should be reached by accepting some classifications, on the one hand, and by taking the liberty of looking at the phenomena from distinct points of view, on the other hand.
