Abnormal Urate Excretion Associated with Renal and Systemic Disorders, Drugs, and Toxins

  • Chapter
Uric Acid

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 51))

Abstract

Abnormalities of renal excretion of urate may result in either hyperuricemia or hypouricemia, or an increase or reduction in the elimination of uric acid by the renal tract. These four abnormalities may also be found in various combinations, the most common being hyperuricemia and reduced renal excretion of urate. However, abnormalities of plasma urate may occur without apparent abnormality of renal excretion, and abnormalities of excretion may be present with normal serum urate concentrations.
