Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 78))

Abstract

The following account of the use of plasmids in gene cloning is an attempt to present this technique against a background of its subsidiary techniques—plasmid genetics, DNA biochemistry, bacterial transformation etc. —while at the same time considering the ways in which the field is likely to develop in view of the particular aims of different categories of cloning experiments. Rapid progress in this area of research will require regular review articles to keep abreast of new developments. New material was incorporated in this review up to the end of January 1977.
