Abstract
In Chap. 4 the structure and function of cell membranes, and more specifically those of the plasma membrane, have been discussed. The plasma membrane separates two compartments: the cytosol and the extracellular space, which have widely different ionic compositions (see Chap. 4, Fig. 11.6). The present chapter deals with the controlled traffic of ions across the plasma membrane, and more specifically with the generation of the membrane voltage and cellular homeostasis. For a more explicit discussion of membrane transport the reader is referred to Chap. 8.
