Zusammenfassung
Die Funktionen, die ein großhirnloses Tier noch zu leisten vermag, sind ziemlich genau bekannt. Viel weniger bekannt dagegen ist, welche von diesen Funktionen vom Hirnstamm aus bedingt sind. Diese Lücke unseres Wissens wird besonders dadurch verursacht, daß man noch immer nicht das Maximum der Leistungen des Rückenmarks hat feststellen können. Ein Tier, bei dem das Rückenmark vom Gehirn abgetrennt ist (dekapitiertes Tier), hat keine Wärmeregulation mehr und es ist nicht imstande spontan zu atmen. Deshalb ist es bisher noch niemals gelungen ein dekapitiertes Tier längere Zeit am Leben zu erhalten. Wohl sind durch Goltz und Freusberg (32), Philippson (71), Sherrington und zahlreiche andere in chronischen Versuchen die Leistungen des caudalen Teiles des Rückenmarks ausführlich untersucht. Aber nach Querdurchtrennung des Brustmarks zeigt der isolierte caudale Teil, die erste Zeit infolge des Shockes und der Diaschyzis, in späteren Stadien infolge einer Dystrophie der Zentren, nicht das Maximum der Leistungen, wie aus dem Vergleich einer großen Anzahl spinaler Tiere hervorgeht. Außerdem fehlt den caudalen Zentren nach dieser Querdurchtrennung die Beeinflussung durch den vorderen Teil des Rückenmarks, und es gehen den Zentren der Hinterpfoten keine Erregungen aus den Vorderpfoten mehr zu, während normalerweise, bei intaktem Nervensystem, die Vorder- und Hinterextremitäten sich gegenseitig beeinflussen.
