Definition
Poly(arylene ethynylene)s are a class of conjugated polymers consisting of aromatic units connected by triple bonds.
Background
Conjugated semiconducting polymers are at the forefront in polymer science, since these materials combine the processability and mechanical properties of polymers with the readily tailored optoelectronic properties of organic molecules. The potential use of these “organic semiconductors” in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) [4,5], field-effect transistors (FETs) [7], and photovoltaic cells [6,17] have especially motivated the development of synthetic and processing protocols for conjugated macromolecular materials with unique field-responsive properties [11,13,15].
The distinctive electronic and physicochemical characteristics of conjugated polymers are governed by the nature of the polymer backbone and also by the intermolecular interactions. In the case for all classes of conjugated polymers, the field-responsive electronic as well as photophysical...
