Abstract
MFEIT (Multi-Frequency Electrical Impedance Tomography) could be used to distinguish between ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke and permit the urgent use of thrombolytic drugs in patients with acute stroke. The UCLH Mk2.5 comprises a single impedance measuring circuit multiplexed to 32 electrodes which can record from 20 Hz to 1.6 MHz. The purpose of this study was to test its performance in liquid filled tanks with resistive or complex backgrounds, with a view to image stroke. Cylinders of banana, potato and gel, 20% of the diameter of a cylindrical or head shaped tank with real human skull were imaged using time difference or linear frequency difference reconstruction algorithms. The UCLH Mk2.5 worked well: both reconstructed images and derived impedance spectra in tanks with the uniform background of 0.1% NaCl saline corresponded closely to direct impedance measurements. With a complex background of pieces of carrot in 0.1% NaCl saline, frequency difference reconstruction of gel and potato was successful in the cylindrical 2D tank, but not the head shaped 3D tank.
