Abstract

› Because of its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties, phototherapy has often proved effective in the treatment of many otherwise refractory inflammatory skin diseases.

› Scleroderma, urticaria pigmentosa and lichen planus in particular have become established indications for this treatment.

› Most of the other rarer indications are based on anecdotal case reports.

› Nevertheless, because of its generally minor short-term adverse effects, phototherapy remains a very useful therapeutic option in many inflammatory dermatoses otherwise refractory to treatment.
