Abstract
In recent years, drought has been strongly affecting the Central Highlands of Vietnam and has resulted in crop damage, yield decline and serious water shortage. Understanding the characteristics of the drought will be helpful to decision makers in managing and planning water resources. The objective of the present study is to predict changes in droughts from agricultural and hydro-meteorological perspectives under the impact of climate change for the Srepok River Basin using three drought indices, such as standardized precipitation index (SPI), standardized runoff index (SRI), and standardized soil moisture index (SSWI). The climate data from the observational period and projected period from CMIP5 global climate models are used to calculate severity and duration of meteorological droughts, and soil water content and streamflow data from the well-calibrated SWAT hydrological model are used to examine the hydrological and agricultural droughts. Then, the droughts with severe, prolonged, and frequent characteristics were analysed. The results show that drought frequency is predicted to increase while drought duration and severity are projected to decrease in the future for the Srepok River Basin. The obtained results would help managers in sustainable water resources management and agricultural planning.
