Elder Abuse

Abstract

Screening for elder abuse is defined as a process of eliciting information about abusive experiences in a caring or family relationship from older or vulnerable adults who do not have obvious sign of abuse. A cornerstone of effective screening is the development of valid and reliable screening measures. This chapter presents a systematic review of a range of approaches to screening for elder abuse and neglect and discusses issues associated with the development of effective screening instruments in this challenging area. The review focuses on two groups of measures. The first are screening measures designed to screen at the community or population level. The second are screening instruments designed for use in healthcare or institutional settings. These are usually administered by interview. The systematic review covers the origin of the scale, the structure of the scale, and the intended respondent and method of administration. In addition, details of the psychometric properties of each scale are provided along with the types of samples on which the validation was undertaken. A summary of strengths and limitations of each measure is also provided. The effectiveness of screening for elder abuse and neglect is reviewed, and future directions for the advancement of screening approaches are discussed.
