Abstract

Although being rare, malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is highly associated with asbestos, and the incidence is high in case of asbestos exposure. Surgery is the first step in the treatment of MPM; however, even an extended surgery is not sufficient for the curative treatment. Moreover, it was shown to decrease the survival rate. Trimodality treatment is required, limited surgical approach with adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy (RT). The main problem in the setting of MPM is local failure. MPM has a tendency to recur in previous drain sites. Despite the controversial studies, many authors recommend the prophylactic irradiation of the drain sites in order to decrease the local recurrence rate. Every patient with MPM should receive RT in the adjuvant setting. It can be administered in a very large range of techniques. More advanced technology has been shown to result in better target coverage with decreased rates of toxicity.
