Abstract

Stratum corneum (SC) forms an efficient multifunctional barrier at the top of the skin. Thanks to its constant renewal and ingenious composition, SC can adapt to the changing environmental conditions. Because the SC barrier function is essential for the organism’s survival, most of the qualitative imperfections of the barrier tend to be compensated by the quantitative changes leading to overexpression of the horny layer. Such pathological situations, when unraveled, permit a better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms involved in the regulation of skin barrier function.
