Strategies to assess oxidative stress

  • Chapter
Oxidative Stress in Skeletal Muscle

Part of the book series: MCBU Molecular and Cell Biology Updates ((MCBU))

Summary

While oxygen is vital to the existence of all aerobic organisms, under certain circumstances it forms reactive species and derivative oxidants that are noxious to biological molecules. However, nature has developed a coordinated antioxidant defence system against such oxidants. An imbalance between oxidant insult and antioxidant defences in favor of the former constitutes the basis for oxidative stress and for conditions leading towards oxidative injury.

In order to ascertain the validity and significance of oxidative stress in biological reactions, it is essential to characterize and quantitate the various substances and enzymes in this balance between oxidants and antioxidants. On the one hand, it is possible to identify, quantify, and localize the various oxidants and antioxidants. But on the other hand, and equally important, it is imperative to assess the oxidative damage inflicted upon biomolecules, e.g. lipids, proteins, and DNA by the various oxidants. The strategies and methodologies currently available to tackle such issues are reviewed in the present work.
