Applications of DNA Fingerprinting in Plant Breeding

Book cover DNA Fingerprinting: Approaches and Applications

Part of the book series: Experientia Supplementum ((EXS,volume 58))

Summary

Several DNA minisatellite probes have yielded fragment profiles that appear very useful for plant breeding work. These fragment profiles show no variation when vegetatively propagated material is analyzed. Similarly, specimens obtained through selfing in inbreeding species exhibit identical profiles. In contrast, genetic recombination in cross-pollinating species results in highly variable, usually individual-specific fragment profiles. Thus different cultivars can be distinguished, as also can genotypes of wild species in natural populations. These fragment profiles can also be utilized in parentage analysis, as has already been conducted in rice and apples, thereby enabling us to elucidate the origin of insufficiently documented cultivars. Moreover, estimates of genetic variation based on similarity indices calculated from fragment profiles show a close association with known levels of genetic relatedness.
