Abstract

Terrestrial plants have developed symbiotic association with mycorrhizal fungi and other endophytic fungi to cope up with nutrient limitations. Nutrient exchange especially carbon transport from the host plant is the fundamental aspect of these associations. This chapter summarizes the sugar transporters which are regulated by symbiotic association and are involved in symbiotic sugar uptake in various symbiotic fungi. Further, the role of sugar transport in the regulation of fungal development during symbiosis and proteins related to transport of soil minerals such as phosphate and nitrate are also discussed. We have also explained the molecular mechanism underlying the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis establishment. Overall, this chapter provides an insight into symbiotic nutrient exchange and sugar transporters.
