Abstract

The metabolic pathways play a crucial role, since they impact all cellular functions. Hence, an accurately controlled metabolism represents a pre-requisite for proper heath of organisms. A brief overview on major metabolic processes of the cells is provided. When the metabolism is dysregulated through frequent alterations in genetical programming, aberrant metabolic phases are present and hence contribute to the initiation of diseases, such as cancer. The dysregulation of metabolic pathways is commonly impacted by mechanical cues of the cellular microenvironment. A comprehension of these metabolic disorders seems to be a critical frontier in healthy processes, such as tissue injury-induced healing and disease-related research fields. This chapter discusses the wide-ranged influence of the metabolism in cellular functions, how beyond state-of-art concepts of metabolism can provide a deeper knowledge of common diseases and considers the development of new metabolic approaches for the treatment of specific diseases.
