The Mango Genome

Part of the book series: Compendium of Plant Genomes ((CPG))

Abstract

Genetic diversity is the foundation of plant breeding, and the importance of plant genetic diversity is increasingly being recognized as a specific field. The plant genetic diversity can be collected and preserved in the form of plant germplasm resources such as gene bank, DNA library, and so forth. Mango is one of the most excellent and popular tropical and subtropical fruit crops around the world. The study of mango genetic diversity using multiple molecular markers is an important strategy for mango germplasm collection, conservation, utilization, and new variety breeding. This chapter comprehensively reviews two important areas: (i) enumeration of existing plant genetic diversity by analytical methods; and (ii) modern tools available for plant genetic diversity analysis. The current review provides essential details about genetic diversity analysis of mango by morphological, biochemical, and molecular markers. The statistical tools used for assessing genetic diversity are briefly discussed, as it can promote the understanding of analysis tools and their practicality to the researchers. This review could benefit mango researchers and producers to employ the new methods and technologies for better and rapid evaluation, for efficient utilization of germplasm from genetic resources to their applied breeding programs.
