Abstract

There are four basic routes to biodiesel production from oils and fats: Base-catalyzed transesterification; Direct acid-catalyzed transesterification; Conversion of the oil into its fatty acids and then into biodiesel and Non-catalytic transesterification of oils and fats. Primary raw materials used in biodiesel production, feedstock preparation, batch processing, continuous process, non-catalyzed transesterification processes (BIOX process and the supercritical methanol) process, basic plant equipment used in biodiesel production have been presented in this chapter.
