Particle Size Measurement

Part of the book series: Powder Technology Series ((PTS))

Abstract

The original work on the flow of fluids through packed beds of powders was carried out by Darcy, who examined the rate of flow of water from the local fountains through beds of sand of various thickness. He showed that the average velocity, as measured over the whole area of the bed, was directly proportional to the driving pressure and inversely proportional to the thickness of the bed, i.e.

$$u = K\frac{{\Delta p}}{L}$$
((15.1))

Equation (15.1) may be compared with the expression for the mean velocity u m of a fluid of viscosity η, flowing in a pipe of circular cross-section and of diameter d:

$$u_m = \frac{{d^2 }}{{32\eta }}\frac{{\Delta p}}{L}$$
((15.2))

This expression was derived by Hagen [2] and independently by Poiseuille [3].
