Abstract
The term retinoid is used to describe the natural and synthetic derivatives of vitamin A. Based on their growth inhibition and maturation-inducing properties in vitro, retinoids have been used and shown to be clinically active in such diverse premalignant and malignant conditions as, cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, leukoplakia, squamous cell carcinomas of the skin, and basal cell carcinomas (Lippman et al., 1987; Smith et al., 1992). Recent clinical data, demonstrating the high response rates using retinoids in patients with cervical cancer (Lippman et al., 1992a) and metastatic squamous cancer of the skin (Lippman et al., 1992b), have kindled further interest in this group of compounds as therapeutic agents.
