A Fish Who Studies Water

Abstract

I was born in New York City and attended public schools there. We spent our summers in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, where my father worked. These summers helped me develop an appreciation for nature that has remained with me. After graduating from high school, I attended Hobart College in Geneva, New York, and then became what the Germans called a Wandervogel (wandering bird). I lived in Greenwich Village and took courses at Columbia, New York University, and the New School for Social Research. Later I attended Penn State and the University of Oklahoma, before encountering Gardner Murphy who brought me to the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas, where I completed my PhD at nearby Lawrence. Coincidentally, my grandmother had attended Kansas University where she had grown up. My great-grandfather had a large clothing store in Lawrence (he hid under the bed dressed in women’s clothing during Quantril’s Raid), and his store is now an historical landmark.
