Synthetic Vitreous Body of PVA Hydrogel

Abstract

Among optical diseases of the eye, those diseases concerned with the cornea and the crystalline lens can be treated by transplanting of human cornea and by extraction of cloudy lens and implantation of plastics intraocular lens (IOL). So far, however, there has been no method developed for curing diseases related to the anomaly of the vitreous body, such as the clouding of vitreous and detachment of retina. In recent years, replacement of diseased vitreous has been of clinical interest and the use of synthetic materials as silicone oil has been investigated for this purpose. But these materials have not yet sufficient properties for clinical use.
