Abstract

In eukaryotic cells, phospholipids required for the biogenesis and maintenance of membranes are synthesized in distinct subcellular compartments. In mammalian cells the bulk of cellular phospholipids is synthesized in the endoplasmic reticuluml; in yeast both mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum share the capacity to synthesize cellular phospholipids2. We have investigated phospholipid biosynthesis in mitochondrial inner and outer membrane, and in two microsomal fractions of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
