Abstract

Molecular excitations (1) in barriers are one aspect of the more general topic of inelastic tunneling. By this latter term we mean the various processes whereby an electron loses energy as it tunnels through a barrier. In the case of molecular excitations the energy loss is to the vibrational modes of molecular species in the barrier. This inelastic process provides an additional path or channel for current flow, and so one sees breaks in the I–V curve as shown in Fig. 1.
