Social Behavioral and Cognitive Characteristics: An Epidemiological Approach

  • Chapter
Autism

Abstract

Kanner, who observed and then named the syndrome of early childhood autism (Kanner, 1943; Kanner & Eisenberg, 1955) believed that the two principal diagnostic criteria (in his view the source of the other clinical manifestations) are extreme self-isolation and an obsessive insistence on sameness. The latter is manifested by resistance to change in aspects of the environment and the daily routine, and by the child’s own stereotyped activities, varying from simple repetitive movements to very elaborate but equally repetitive rituals.
