Transplacental Toxicity of Environmental Chemicals

Environmental Causes and Correlates of Spontaneous Abortions, Malformations, and Childhood Cancer

  • Chapter
Book cover Advances in Perinatal Medicine

Abstract

The mechanisms of reproductive ill effects are complex because both maternal and paternal factors can operate.1–3 It is clear that maternal factors have an important role in spontaneous abortion and malformations. Increasing attention has recently been paid to the possibility that paternal effects may cause spontaneous abortions and childhood cancer in the offspring.4 This review is restricted to human transplacental effects that interact with the embryo or fetus during pregnancy only.
